Migraine Treatment with Corydalis Herb
By Kevin Lance Jones, OMD, L. Ac.
The best Chinese herb that treats migraine headaches is Corydalis Yanhusuo. It is an analgesic and has been used as a Chinese cure for migraine headache for centuries. As an Acupuncturist, the lacks of an effective pain killer without harmful side effects led me seek a Chinese herbal treatment for migraine headaches, chronic pain, acute pain and inflammatory pain.
Corydalis works differently than prescription pain medications that block pain signals in the brain by filling in the Opiate Receptors. Corydalis on the other hand works on the Dopamine system in the brain and is associated with the “pleasure center” in the central nervous system. Importantly, experts say Corydalis can be used to treat chronic pain without carrying the same risk of addiction that many Opiate (from the Opium plant) prescription pain medications do.
Recently, I had a patient who was having nerve pain caused by a “pinched nerve.” He was taking Vicodin (a narcotic) because the pain was so intense. I gave him Corydalis; he stopped taking Vicodin immediately and took Corydalis which has no addictive side effects.
Corydalis is generally considered to be safe for healthy adults. It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women or by people with an irregular heart rhythm. It may also have some interactions with medications such as hypnotics, sedatives, cancer medications. It is contraindicated for people taking anti-arrhythmic drugs and should be used under a doctor’s supervision.
According to research at the University of California at Irvine Corydalis contains the powerful painkiller dehydrocorybulbine (DHCB), which alleviates headaches, joint pain, backache and menstrual cramps. It releases dopamine in the brain, which produces feelings of well-being and happiness.Olivier Civelli, his UC Irvine colleagues and his Chinese partners isolated a compound called DHCB from the roots of the Corydalis yanhusuo plant.
Lead researcher Olivier Civelli said, “We landed on DHCB but rapidly found that it acts not through the morphine receptor but through other receptors, in particular one that binds dopamine.” Some of the earlier studies have indicated that the dopamine D2 receptor plays a critical role in pain sensations.
The findings of the University of California at Irvine-China study were published on Jan. 20, 2014 issue of Current Biology.
